Summer Term Maths Intervention: Supporting Successful Transition

As the academic year moves into its final term, many schools begin focusing on one key question: are students ready for the next stage in September?

The summer term offers an ideal opportunity to consolidate learning, address gaps in understanding, and build the confidence students need for a successful transition to the next year group or key stage.

At MathsMakers, we offer targeted Summer Term Maths Intervention programmes for students in Years 5–10, designed to support schools in strengthening core mathematical skills before the new academic year begins.

Why focus on transition?

Transitions can be challenging for many students. Whether moving from Year 5 to Year 6, progressing through Key Stage 3, or preparing for GCSE years, students benefit from additional support to reinforce key concepts and build confidence in their mathematical thinking.

Our small-group approach ensures that students receive the focused attention they need to make meaningful progress.

What our programmes include

Our Summer Term boosters are designed to be flexible and tailored to each school's needs.

Schools can expect:

  • Personalised small-group support that helps students develop confidence and deepen understanding

  • Flexible delivery – sessions can be delivered in school or online at a time that suits the timetable

  • A strong focus on core mathematical skills, including number sense, decimal place value, fluency with operations, and algebra foundations

  • Interactive and engaging sessions, including problem-solving activities and opportunities for students to explain their reasoning

  • Proven impact, with 94% of students reporting that they made progress in our recent programmes

Supporting students before September

Targeted support during the summer term can help students:

  • Consolidate key learning from the current year

  • Address gaps in understanding before they widen

  • Develop confidence in maths

  • Feel better prepared for the expectations of the next year group

Working with schools

MathsMakers works in partnership with schools and community groups to design programmes that meet the specific needs of their students. Thanks to grants, sponsorships and donations, we are often able to offer subsidised rates for schools.

If your school is considering additional maths support during the summer term, we would be delighted to discuss how we can help.

For online intervention, MathsMakers has been working with schools as part of the National Tutoring Programme (NTP). MathsMakers is an approved NTP tuition partner. Post NTP, we are continuing to develop and expand our online programmes. We charge a subsidised rate to schools that can be covered using their Pupil Premium funding.

MathsMakers also delivers in-person intervention in partnership with schools and other education charities, thanks to endorsement and support from John Lyon’s Charity and other funders. Each year we have a limited number of these programmes available at heavily subsidised rates. Please contact us for more information.

MathsMakers recognises the significant value of working in partnership with schools. More information about how mainstream schools, supplementary schools and other education organisations work together is provided by Securing Success in a short video here. Securing Success has provided several years of guidance and support for MathsMakers and we are glad to share their vision of partnership work with schools.

MathsMakers partners with schools to reduce the attainment gap and make maths accessible for all.
