It was sobering to watch this morning's presentation by Ayesha Baloch of the latest analysis in her Impetus report on Exploring compound disadvantage: "Young people who are from low socio-economic backgrounds, who have low qualifications and also have SEND are almost three times more likely to be not in education, training or employment (NEET)"
"Low qualifications" refers to not having 5 GCSE passes, including in Maths and English. Ayesha explained that every step up the qualifications ladder (including getting those GCSE passes) can halve the chance of a young person becoming NEET. In our MathsMakers programmes, we work with children and young people from low socio-economic background and with SEND. They have tremendous potential but need some extra attention, encouragement and support to succeed. We are glad to partner with schools and local community organisations to provide that extra support and make a difference to their lives.
