Today is Number Day, an annual initiative led by the NSPCC that brings schools and communities together to celebrate maths while raising vital funds to support children. At MathsMakers, it’s a day that feels especially close to our hearts - not just because we love numbers, but because we see every day how the right kind of maths support can change how young people feel about learning.
Number Day is about more than dressing up or fun activities (though those are always welcome!). It’s a chance to shine a light on the role maths plays in building confidence, problem-solving skills and resilience. These are qualities that matter far beyond the classroom.
The numbers that matter to us
At MathsMakers, we work with students who often arrive feeling anxious, behind, or convinced that maths “just isn’t for them”. That’s why we focus on small-group tuition, personalised support and creating a safe, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.
One of our favourite numbers is 95%.
That’s the percentage of students last year who told us they felt they had made progress through MathsMakers. Behind that number are real stories of growing confidence, improved understanding and students who are beginning to believe in their own ability.
For us, Number Day is a reminder that progress isn’t just about test scores. It’s about helping students feel capable, supported and motivated to keep going.
Why Number Day matters
The NSPCC’s Number Day raises money to fund services that help keep children safe and supported. Schools across the country take part in creative and inclusive ways, using maths as a positive, shared experience.
We’re proud to support and amplify this initiative, and we encourage schools, families and communities to get involved if they can. You can find out more about Number Day and how to take part on the NSPCC website:
Celebrating maths, confidence and progress
As we mark Number Day, we’re celebrating every student who has shown up, tried again, asked a question, or taken a small step forward in their learning. These moments may not always be captured by a single statistic, but they are the foundation of real, lasting progress.
From all of us at MathsMakers, happy Number Day. Here’s to the power of numbers when they’re used to build confidence, open doors and support young people to reach their potential.
