🌟 Celebrating World Autism Day with a shoutout to the incredible neurodiverse members of our team and students! 🌟
Here at MathsMakers we take pride in working with children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities: https://www.mathsmakers.org/send
Here are some thoughts from one of our maths Instructors who is neurodiverse:
“As an Autistic Instructor, I certainly feel supported by the MathsMakers team and find my neurodiversity actually helps me to connect really well with our neurodiverse students. It means I can relate to their challenges and help them to get the most out of each session.
We have had students who are still in the early stages of getting their diagnosis and I believe our feedback to the school on these students helps a lot. Since we work in much smaller classes than regular sessions we can get to know each student and pick up on a lot that might fly under the radar in a larger class.
One activity that has consistently stood out is our Maths Scavenger Hunt. Many of our neurodivergent students have specifically mentioned how much they enjoy it! While the questions are familiar, it adds the novelty of moving around the room, which keeps them engaged. Plus, with only one question in front of them at a time, they can focus more easily. It’s been amazing to see how well this format works for them, and it's clear that breaking down larger worksheets into smaller, manageable chunks makes a huge difference”
Let's continue to create inclusive spaces where everyone can shine. 🌈💙
